Opera Australia's Lorina Gore returns to raise her voice in song

Soprano Lorina Gore had a busy year of singing lined up in 2020.

Then coronavirus happened and much of that simply didn't - and couldn't - happen, so she spent a lot of time as a stay-at-home mum.

But this year is looking better for performing opportunities.

As the Canberra Symphony Orchestra's Artist in Focus for 2021, she performed Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins with the orchestra in March, conducted by Jessica Cottis.

She has another, more intimate performance on Sunday, June 6 as part of the Canberra Symphony Orchestra's (CSO) Recital Series.

Gore, accompanied by pianist Alan Hicks, will perform a self-selected program of songs and arias by Mozart, Lehar and others.

Schubert's Der Erlknoig is a challenge for both pianist and singer. Gore has to create four different characters in higher and lower vocal registers - a narrator, a father ride with his a son and a supernatural creature.

She says: "I never got to sing it as a student in Canberra."

Hicks will also perform solo works by Gounod and Poulenc.

Gore came to Canberra from Sydney in 1991. Her first role here was in a Canberra Philharmonic Society production of The Mikado. In 1996 she began five years of studying voice at the Australian National University and after graduation was recruited by Opera Australia.

"One of my favourite roles was Violetta in La Traviata - that was really special."

In July, Gore will work with the CSO again, performing a new work by Australian composer Paul Dean, and in November she will perform the role of the Rhinemaiden Woglinde for the third time in the third Australian production of Richard Wagner's Der Ring des Niebelugen.

Soprano Lorina Gore and pianist Alan Hicks will perform on Sunday, June 6 at 2pm at Gaden Hall, National Gallery of Australia at 2pm. Tickets $30-$45. Bookings: cso.org.au/lorina-gore-recital.
