Dad swept away by swollen river while working as a telephone engineer

An engineer was swept away by a swollen river as he was setting up a telephone line for a customer, a coroner has heard.

Alun Owen fell into the river in Abergwyngregyn, Gwynedd, on October 6.

A search was launched for the 32-year-old dad, but he sadly could not be saved.

His body was identified by his brother after it was recovered by members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team, North Wales Live reports.

An inquest into his death was opened in Caernarfon on November 9, with assistant coronor Katie Sutherland confirming Mr Owen's provisional cause of death had been listed as drowning.

The hearing was told how Mr Owen had been setting up a new telephone line for a customer when he got into difficulty.

Ms Sutherland said: "An investigation between North Wales Police and the Health and Safety Executive into Mr Owen's death is ongoing.

"Therefore the inquest into his death will be adjourned."

She said due to the nature of the investigation it could be that the full inquest is not heard for more than 12 months.

Mr Owen's family were said to be "absolutely devastated" by his death.

In a statement released by North Wales Police at the time, his family said: "Everyone who was fortunate to get to know Al soon realised he was a larger than life character with a wicked sense of humour; full of fun and energy with a happy-go-lucky approach to life.

"Helping people is what he loved doing and would often go out of his way to help anyone. He was totally selfless, which is why he was dearly loved by his many friends and indeed within the community where he was more fondly known as Al Bonc."

A fundraising page set up in his memory to support his wife, Ceri and his twin daughters Anni and Cet raised more than £41,000.

Friend Lee Evans, who was behind the Gofundme page said in a statement following his death: "Alun was a extremely popular and friendly engineer and a loving family man. He will be greatly missed by all."
