Opening hours of vital Liverpool Council service to be cut as budget pressures continue

Liverpool Council is set to cut the hours of its call centre as budgets continue to be squeezed.

The authority's cabinet will meet next week to agree changes to its contact centre opening hours that will see all weekend service cut.

The centre will go from operating 24/7 365 days year to only operating between 8am and 6pm on weekdays.

Two management roles in the centre will go as part of the plans.

The cabinet report says that Liverpool is in the minority among cities in operating a 24/7 call centre service 365 days a year and that savings need to be made to help the council's daunting financial situation.

The cabinet report says: "As part of the City Council’s avoidable costs and budget savings exercise it was agreed at the City Council budget meeting on 8th March 2017 to revise the Contact Centre opening hours to generate cost savings.

"This is also part of our strategy to enable and encourage citizens to access Council Services for themselves through self-service and automated  channels, where it is appropriate to do so."

It says that 87% of calls handled by the centre are taken between the proposed new opening times of 8am-6pm Monday to Friday.

It will not affect other council phone services such as Careline, which will remain a 24/7 service.

City figures from across the political spectrum have continued to raise the alarm about the ominous financial situation in the city.

Mayor Joe Anderson has warned that Liverpool faces its most significant financial challenge since the war as the council prepares to slice £57m from the city's budget by 2021.

The local authority has £19m to cut before next April, with a minimum of £25m to follow in the next financial year.

A cross party motion calling on central government to commit to properly funding local government was agreed by all four parties on the council at a meeting earlier this year .

The cabinet will meet to agree the new contact centre opening hours next Friday.
