Opening film at Joburg Film Festival to highlight apartheid history

Berlin Film Festival adds new films

The upcoming Joburg Film Festival, set to take place from February 27 to March 3 in Johannesburg, South Africa, is garnering attention for its selection of thought-provoking films. Among the highlights is the opening film, 'London Recruits,' directed by Gordon Main. This documentary delves into a crucial chapter of South Africa's history during the apartheid era. It focuses on a clandestine operation led by Oliver Tambo to recruit young British activists, who posed as tourists, with the mission of inspiring ordinary South Africans to join the liberation movement.

Produced by a talented team including Jacintha de Nobrega, Robyn Slovo, Geoff Arbourne, Colin Charles, James Barrett, and Felix Gill, 'London Recruits' sheds light on the brave mission undertaken by these activists. It showcases their resilience in the face of a brutal regime, determined to maintain racial segregation and oppression. The documentary provides a unique perspective on the fight against apartheid and the role played by international supporters.

The sixth edition of the Joburg Film Festival promises to offer an impressive lineup of more than 60 films from over 30 countries. International award-winning films such as 'Perfect Days' by Wim Wenders, 'Evil Does Not Exist' by Ryusuke Hamaguchi, 'All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt' produced by Barry Jenkins, and 'Mami Wata' directed by C.J. Obasi are among the notable selections. These films tackle a variety of themes, showcasing the diversity and creativity in contemporary cinema.

In addition to the film screenings, the Joburg Film Festival aims to foster connections in the industry through the JBX Content Market. This platform facilitates interaction between African content creators and buyers, both domestically and internationally. The market will feature exhibition stands, workshops, and panel discussions covering topics such as content strategies for global and regional video-on-demand platforms, as well as Africa's growing animation and gaming scenes.

To ensure the adherence to industry standards and recognize filmmaking excellence, the Joburg Film Festival has assembled a prestigious panel of jurors for its three competition strands. This year's panel includes Tosh Gitonga, a Kenyan-born filmmaker known for 'Nairobi Half-Life,' South African actors Nthati Moshesh and Jerry Mofokeng wa Makthetha, esteemed international sales and production veteran Pape Boye, and festival manager/programmer Andrea Voges.

The festival will culminate in the announcement of winners in various categories. The competing films in the Best African/Diaspora Film category include 'Hajjan' from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan, 'Mami Wata' from Nigeria, 'Under the Hanging Tree' from Namibia, and 'Yellow Bus' from the UAE. The Best Film category features powerful entries such as 'Death of a Whistleblower' and 'Snake' from South Africa, 'Thus Spoke Zolani' from South Africa, 'All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt' from the United States, 'Mandoob' from Saudi Arabia, 'Tiger Stripes' from Malaysia, and 'Whisper of Fire and Water' from India. The Best Documentary category comprises 'Bye Bye Tiberias' from Belgium and Palestine, 'London Recruits' from South Africa and the United Kingdom, 'Life Through This Lens: Sam Nzima' from South Africa, and 'Who I Am Not' from the United States and Romania.

With its diverse selection of films and its focus on promoting African talent and content, the Joburg Film Festival continues to establish itself as a significant event in the global film industry. As the festival approaches, movie enthusiasts and industry professionals alike eagerly anticipate the opportunity to engage with thought-provoking stories and celebrate the captivating art of film.
