When Planet Ice ice rink in Leeds will open plus first Leeds Chiefs ice hockey team home game

The long-awaited opening date for Planet Ice in Leeds has been announced.

The owners have announced that the rink, just off Elland Road, will open to the public at 4pm on January 31 in 2020.

Planet Ice, which features a 56x26m ice pad and 2,000-capacity arena, will also be the new home of semi-professional ice hockey team Leeds Chiefs.

The Chiefs will play their first home game at the rink on the opening date - January 31 - against the Sheffield Steeldogs.

Tickets have already sold out for the game.

The rink was originally due to open in January 2019, but there have been several setbacks since construction got underway in 2016.

Heath Rhodes, Planet Ice chief operations officer, said: "‘l am aware the Leeds community have been on a bit of a roller-coaster ride waiting for the rink to open and we do appreciate their patience.

"I’d also like to extend our thanks to Leeds City Council for their understanding of what has been a difficult project with many setbacks.

"We are now focused on opening the doors to a permanent ice rink in Leeds from January 31."

There will also be a first-floor bar, that will open in April 2020, and people will be able to take ice skating lessons at the rink and hire it out for birthday parties and other events.
