Opening date announced for new Morrisons in Kirkby

A new Morrisons is set to open in Kirkby later this month, in a major boost for the town.

An announcement on Knowsley Council’s website said the new supermarket will open on October 21.

It is one of the biggest developments within a wider revamp of the town centre that has seen new restaurants opened and a cinema under construction.

Kirkby has been without a large supermarket for many years, with previous attempts to regenerate the town not coming to fruition.

Knowsley Council bought the town centre two years ago in an attempt to take control of the plans and speed them up and leader Graham Morgan said he was “delighted” that the store would soon open.

He said: “I’m incredibly proud of what has been achieved in such a short space of time. It’s been less than two years since we took ownership of Kirkby Town Centre and started the construction of the new retail development – bearing in mind we’ve had a pandemic to contend with too!

“I’m delighted to be able to share the Morrisons opening date – something we have all been waiting for.”

The new shop will open at 7am on Thursday, October 21.

It will then be open between 7am and 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

It is located on Irlam Drive in Kirkby. Nearby is a Morrisons petrol station, which is already one.

KFC and Taco Bell restaurants, which both opened earlier this summer, are also close, as is a planned Home Bargains.
