
OpenAI has now signed a whopping $38 billion multi-year contract with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to power and scale its artificial intelligence workloads over the next seven years. This is likely to be one of the biggest cloud partnerships in the AI space and indicates OpenAI’s growing infrastructure needs as it continues to advance the intelligence and capabilities of its models.
Under the deal, OpenAI will use AWS’s high-performance infrastructure, including hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs and the ability to scale up to tens of millions of CPUs. The company will use this compute power to train and deploy its next-generation models and support agentic workloads, including those that run behind ChatGPT.
AWS will build a custom setup for OpenAI featuring GB200 and GB300 GPUs clustered through Amazon EC2 UltraServers. This architecture is designed for maximum efficiency and low-latency performance, allowing OpenAI to process complex workloads faster and more reliably. All the new compute capacity is expected to be fully deployed by the end of 2026, with additional expansion planned into 2027 and beyond.
The partnership extends the two companies’ growing collaboration in AI. Earlier this year, OpenAI’s open-weight foundation models were made available on Amazon Bedrock, giving AWS customers access to new AI capabilities for tasks like coding, data analysis, and workflow automation. OpenAI has since become one of the most popular model providers on the platform, with clients including Peloton, Thomson Reuters, and Triomics integrating its technology into their operations.
However, this is not the only deal OpenAI has signed in recent times. Recently, the company has been expanding its network through partnerships to secure cloud and hardware resources in support of its growing AI ambitions. In addition to the $38 billion AWS agreement, OpenAI has committed $250 billion in cloud services to Microsoft Azure and signed a $300 billion, five-year deal with Oracle, while also relying on Google for additional infrastructure support.
