Which one will officially launch first is anyone’s guess.
Traces of a mysterious new model called GPT-5.1 Thinking have surfaced in ChatGPT’s backend, hinting that OpenAI is getting ready to launch a version of its flagship model optimized for deeper, more deliberate reasoning. That’s a big deal, and it may be a direct response to Google’s plans to release Gemini 3 Pro, which promises multimodal smarts and long-context memory — whenever it officially rolls out. Although the name “Thinking” might sound a bit gimmicky, if the OpenAI model lives up to the early leaks, we’re looking at a smarter, slower more strategic version of GPT.
In other words, this is the kind of upgrade that could once again reshape how we use AI across both personal and professional tasks.
What is GPT-5.1 Thinking?
The clues in the X post above show GPT-5-1-Thinking listed among other ChatGPT model variants. While OpenAI hasn’t made any official announcement, the name alone suggests a shift in focus beyond better performance and toward how the model reasons.
This could mean a few things:
- Multi-step reasoning: the model might break down your prompt and “think” through it before responding.
- Thinking budgets: It may spend more time or computing power on harder tasks, much like a human would pause to consider a tough question.
- Better context handling: OpenAI could be tuning this model to understand nuance and ambiguity more clearly, similar to Claude’s recent chain-of-thought upgrades.
OpenAI’s secret weapon against Gemini?
All of this is happening just as Google prepares to launch Gemini 3 Pro, a major step forward in its AI roadmap. Early signs suggest Gemini 3 Pro will come with a massive 1-million-token context window — ideal for long documents, code and complex projects.
So while Google is betting big on memory and scale, OpenAI seems to be betting on cognitive depth; the ability to reason, reflect, and deliver answers that go beyond surface-level smarts.
