OpenAI has released an update to its Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT. It claims to improve the quality of speech and adds built-in language translation capabilities for paid users.
The update claims to bring big improvements in how ChatGPT speaks. If we go by the release note shared by OpenAI, voice responses now feature more natural intonation, pauses, and emphasis, which makes the AI sound closer to how humans talk in the real world.

Now available to all paid users in ChatGPT.
In addition to sounding more lifelike, the voice feature now includes intuitive real-time translation. This means you can ask ChatGPT to translate between languages, and the voice assistant will continue translating throughout the conversation unless told otherwise. OpenAI says this can be especially useful in travel or international work settings, like asking for directions in Italy or holding a multilingual meeting with colleagues in Tokyo.
These new capabilities are already live for all the ChatGPT Plus and Pro users across the devices. So, if you are a Plus or Pro user, you can tap on the mic icon in the message composer to access the upgraded voice mode.
Some Known Issues Remain
Despite these improvements, there are some limitations that the company has listed. According to OpenAI, in some cases, users may experience inconsistent tone or pitch depending on the voice option selected. Apart from that, the AI giant is also investigating audio hallucinations, where the AI might generate ad-like sounds, background music, or gibberish. These issues were observed during testing and are expected to be addressed in future updates.
Recent Upgrades to ChatGPT
The voice update is not the only upgrade to ChatGPT. Recently, OpenAI introduced Connectors in Deep Research, a beta feature that allows Team, Enterprise, Edu, and select Pro and Plus users to link ChatGPT to internal and external data sources like Gmail, Google Drive, Outlook, and GitHub.
