Open Streets Edinburgh - Everything you can do as Old Town goes traffic-free on 5 May

Many roads in Edinburgh's historic Old Town will be closed to traffic on Sunday, 5 May, as the city trials its first Open Streets event.

This is part of a series of traffic closures planned for the first Sunday of every month, opening up the city to people on foot or bike.

The council says this is to allow the city centre to be "more people-focussed", letting cafés, restaurants and other attractions thrive.

A number of events will be taking place on Sunday, including free use of the city's Just Eat hire bikes and a picnic area on the Royal Mile. The closures will be in place between midday and 5pm.

Transport convener Lesley Macinness said: "I’m delighted that Edinburgh will very soon be joining cities around the world to reap the benefits of Open Streets.

“Climate change is a real threat to society, it’s clear that we have to act, and Open Streets is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.

"We are wholeheartedly committed to creating an accessible, sustainable and people-friendly city and I look forward to seeing lots of residents and visitors enjoying all that’s on offer on 5 May against a cleaner, more welcoming traffic-free backdrop."
