Open prize money 2021 split as top golfers go for glory

The winner of the 149th Open Championship will get his hands on the famous Claret Jug on Sunday.

The world's top golfers are taking on the links challenge of Royal St George's over the next four days.

They are all looking to get their hands on the famous Claret Jug.

They will also pocket some lucrative prizemoney.

This year's total prize fund is a cool £8.2m - which is up £700,000 from two years ago at Royal Portrush when Shane Lowry went on to win.

The winner at Royal St George's on Sunday will land a massive £1.4m, which will be the first time the winner's purse will exceed $2 million dollars (USD).

Irish golfer Lowry collected around $1.93m following his success in this tournament in 2019.

The runner-up will receive £864,926 with third place winning just over £554,480.

Chief executive Martin Slumbers stated: “We have increased the prize fund for The Open this year and believe that it fully reflects the Championship’s stature in world sport.”

“As the only men’s major championship played outside of America, The Open has a global role to play and we are determined to continue to attract the top players.”
