Open highlights: Watch as Graeme McDowell walks up 18th to incredible roar from Royal Portrush crowd

Darren Clarke talked about the emotion of hitting the first shot at this week's Open Championship.

And Graeme McDowell got to savour the same rousing Royal Portrush roar as he finished his tournament on Sunday.

The Portrush native was back at home for the 148th Open , the local hero trying to win the Claret Jug in his back yard.

It wasn't to be for Gmac, a final round of 77 leaving him on four-over-par for the tournament.

It did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the crowd who cheered on one of their own up the 18th fairway on Sunday.

And as this video shows, it was an emotional one for Gmac:

Speaking after his final round, McDowell said: "It has been amazing. I am so proud of this town and the country of Northern Ireland - the whole island.

"The people who came here have just been full of good cheer, and full of excitement at having this great tournament back here.

"We've got an Irishman up there leading, it is great stuff.

"I have been overwhelmed by comments of players and caddies and TV crews, saying this is the best links course they've ever seen, and the best Open venue they have ever been to.

"For someone who grew up in this town, I love this place. It is amazing.

"It is a realisation of a dream seeing the Open back here, and how proud and excited the fans have been.

"I wish I could have played a bit better, but I won't let that back nine destroy my week and the way I feel about this week.

"It was so great on so many levels."
