Opal Fruits are coming back - 22 years after changing name to Starburst

Retro sweet lovers are in for a treat, as Starburst is going back to its original name.

Starburst will change its name to Opal Fruits 22 years after the sweets were rebranded, makers Mars have confirmed.

Fans will be able to get their hands on the goodies from stores like Poundland, B&M, Home Bargains, Iceland, Savers and The Range.

However, if you want to get some you'll need to be quick as they are only on offer for a limited time.

The chewy, fruity sweets were launched in 1960. In 1998 the name changed to Starburst to match what they were called in the US at the time.

The only difference between two, is that Starburst includes a lemon and lime sweet and a blackcurrant one, while Opal fruits came in strawberry, lemon, orange and lime.

Hannah Jackson, senior brand manager at Mars, told The Sun: “I’m delighted that Opal Fruits are making a special return to British shelves.

“Bringing back the original flavours is sure to bring a smile to the faces of retro treat lovers across the nation. Be quick, though – they won’t be available for long!”

And those with a sweet tooth have been quick to comment on the news, as one excited Instagram user wrote: “Opal fruits, loved them as a kid in 60s and 70s.”

They are available to buy in Poundland from tomorrow, Tuesday, February 25.
