Opal by Jennifer L. Armentrout – review

This book consists of pure, raw emotion that no reader can withstand.

Opal is the third book in the Lux series out of five. There is Obsidian, the first book where I fell in love with the two main characters, Daemon - cocky, selfish, arrogant yet beautiful, a protective and awesome Luxen alien; and Katy, witty, confident and determined. Usually, in a series, the first book is always my favourite as it’s when you first get to know the characters and explore this new world. If you have yet to read Obsidian, I highly recommend it. As expected, Onyx, the second book, didn’t reach the standard of Obsidian. Disappointed but hopeful, I reached for Opal. I was in for serious shock.

Daemon is a triplet with his sister Dee and brother Dawson who went missing two years ago with his human girlfriend, Bethany, whom he healed, causing her to mutate into a Luxen hybrid. They were captured by the DOD and a lot of bad stuff went down. Now Dawson has escaped and he is desperate to get Bethany out. He isn’t the same brother as everyone remembers, he is timid and reckless. The others agreed to help Dawson bring Bethany back, despite the great risk it brings.

Opal

Back to Katy and Daemon, whose relationship has flourished and become closer than ever, until they are forced to trust the devil. Yes, Blake is back, but he isn’t the only one looking for trouble; Will - the man who crept his way into Katy’s life through her mum and blackmailed Daemon to mutate him, briefly returns and he’s out for blood…

Katy is thrown out of her comfort zone, which both amusing for us and for Daemon, as their witty banter continues. Katy, though still having bad blood with the rest of the family, becomes family. She takes on great sacrifice and risk, just as the rest of the Luxen do to get Bethany back.

To be honest, so far I am in love with the whole series, its cringeworthy and funny and just overall entertaining. But Opal stands out for me, probably because unlike the other two books, there is a major plot twist at the end which breaks a piece of your heart.

I kid you not, my stomach flipped when I finished the book and I was left speechless. It took a good few minutes to process and I was considering finishing the series there, shielding myself from more heartbreak and disappointment. But I couldn’t do that to Daemon and Katy; I have the fourth book Origin at the ready, and I have a feeling it wont be able to compete with Opal.
