Onyx Boox Tab Ultra review: A robust powerhouse with an impeccable battery and practical camera

Onyx Boox is already having an eventful year, after the great reception their Note Air 2 Plus received.

Looking to build upon the Note Air 2 Plus success Onyx Boox has released three new Ebooks including the Tab Ultra, which appears to be their most adventurous Ebook to date.

The Tab Ultra comes built with a plethora of new features and design features that elevate it from an Ebook to more of a PC-esque tablet.

It’s one of the biggest Ebooks amongst Onyx Boox’s products, with a body that's 6.7mm thick and weighs a hefty 480g, which isn’t bad considering it includes a camera.

The Tab Ultra has an aluminum body that’s very tough and robust. I was highly impressed with the Note Air 2 Plus' stellar build, but Onyx Boox has taken things up a notch, and even for its slightly bulkier design the Tab Ultra feels comfortable during use.

One of the new additions to The Tab Ultra is the magnetic protective case that also includes a keyboard. The keyboard is much smaller than the average most people are used to, however, it worked admirably during day-to-day use.

This case is really classy and it's leather black design complements the tablet very well. The case does add extra weight to the Tab Ultra, but it also grants additional protection and versatility, which is a fair compromise

The Tab Ultra is another premium-looking Ebook from Onyx, whose ergonomic approach has struck the right balance between style and practicality.

The Tab Ultra’s large screen is 10.3 inches and utilises E INK Carta HD display technology, which is pretty standard with all black and white ebooks.

It has a resolution of 1872×1404 with 227 PPI which is very good compared to what's on the market.

The eye-friendly display is crystal clear with the new light settings allowing everything to look that more stunning.

Note Air 2 Plus has an amazing refresh rate but the Tab Ultra introduces Boox’s Super Refresh Technology which has dramatically improved its performance.

Transitions are lightning fast and much smoother than before. There are four refresh modes that allow users to complete a variety of tasks at great speeds.

I found the Balance and Fast modes to be sufficient for most of the activities I put the Tab Ultra through.

The Tab Ultra’s performance has also been improved by its new Qualcomm Octa-core which enables the Ebook to run multiple tasks efficiently.

All of this new power has been streamlined through the new U.I which makes navigation a breeze. The stylus works a charm and is very responsive especially when running on the built-in app.

The low latency ensured that the Tab Ultra Plus was able to track all my hand movements accurately no matter how scruffy my handwriting was.

The Tab Ultra comes with an Octa-Core processor with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

This additional storage is fantastic and unlike its other Ebooks, Onyx Boox has included a TF card slot, meaning users finally have an extra memory option and an easier way to upload documents.

For the first time, Tab Ultra is equipped with a 16MP rear camera for built-in document scanning and OCR functions as well as compatibility with third-party photo and scan apps.

This enhancement improves the Tab Ultra’s functionality adding much more value to its already great list of features.

It takes clear and concise images that allow it to effortlessly transfer text from the image into its system to be edited.

It runs on Android 11 which is still one generation behind but considering what the device will be used for, it is sufficient and runs effortlessly.

The Tab Ultra will grant users access to the majority of the ebook app stores available. It also will read pretty much every type of ebook format from PDF, MOBI, EPUB, FB2, and more, which is fantastic.

The Note Air 2 introduced an amazing 3700mAh battery which was a huge improvement from its predecessors, but the Tab Ultra tops that with an incredible 6300mAh battery which lasted for almost three weeks after constant use.

Onyx Boox Tab Ultra Verdict 4 / 5

The Tab Ultra is a massive upgrade for Onyx Boox, with the new enhancements allowing the Ebook to outperform its predecessors. The inclusion of a camera, new processor, and bespoke refresh rate really elevate the entire experience making this one of Onyx Boox's best products to date.
