Onward superstitious soldiers!

This quote from Mike Huckabee before Liberty University a few weeks back just astounded me on the eve of Iowa's caucus.

Here's The New Yorker's Hendrik Hertzberg setting up the context before delivering the quote:

A few weeks ago at Liberty University (founder: the late J. Falwell), a student asked him what accounted for his rocketing poll numbers. "There's only one explanation for it, and it's not a human one," he said. "It's the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of five thousand people--and that's the only way that our campaign could be doing what it's doing."

You'd think there weren't enough wastebaskets in a place to catch all the vomit from the audience that had to hear such tripe, even if it was Liberty University.

Yet Iowans are gobbling this Christian cud up.

Today's Des Moines Register ran this story of average Iowans and why they are choosing a certain candidate. Here's what Jodi Wilcox, 28, of Oskaloosa, says about Huckabee.

I believe he is a God-fearing man. Our country really was founded as a God-fearing nation. Until we get back to that, I feel that some of the other issues and problems that we have are not going to get resolved until at least our nation has more morals again and knows right from wrong.

Think that's a bad rationale for Huckabee, try Randy Hartman, 51, of Cedar Rapids:

My wife had the opinion when she first heard his name, 'Oh, he can't win. Nobody knows him.' As a conservative Christian I think if God wants him in the White House, he's going to be there. I don't care what his name is.

Once again, the big guy is working through the American people to subvert democracy for his only son. You'd think George Bush would have disproved the whole God's choice theory but evidence is for the inebriated anyhow.

Iowans for Mike Huckabee: where superstition goes to thrive tomorrow night.
