Only two players remain from Redskins’ 2015 and 2016 draft classes

The Washington Redskins hit a drafting lull in 2015 and 2016, which is becoming more and more apparent in the wake of the team announcing its 2019 53-man roster.

With 2016 first-round pick Josh Doctson now gone, as Jake Russell of the Washington Post pointed out, just two players remain from those draft classes: Brandon Scherff and Matt Ioannidis.

For reference, the 2015 draft:

  • (5)Brandon Scherff
  • (38) Preston Smith
  • (95)Matt Jones
  • (105) Jamison Crowder
  • (112) Arie Kouandjio
  • (141) Martrell Spaight
  • (181) Kyshoen Jarrett
  • (182) Tevin Mitchel
  • (187) Evan Spencer
  • (222) Austin Reiter

And the 2016 draft:

  • (22) Josh Doctson
  • (53) Su’a Cravens
  • (84) Kendall Fuller
  • (152) Matt Ioannidis
  • (187) Nate Sudfeld
  • (232) Steven Daniels
  • (242) Keith Marshall

There are some good spots in there. Jamison Crowder was a big-play artist when he was healthy and Preston Smith was a solid pass rusher the front office didn’t want to pay, for example.

But the hit rate isn’t great and shows why the team is still fighting to adequately fill some depth spots on the roster.

That said, coming away with a franchise lineman like Schreff and a superb all-around player like Ioannidis makes the overall whiffs easier to forgive.
