Only two out of five staff at 'Britain's FBI' think they have tools to do job


Just two out of five staff at the National Crime Agency believe they have the tools to do their job effectively, damning research has revealed.

A Labour analysis of the latest Civil Service People Survey uncovered how workers at some of the country’s top security departments do not think they have what they need.

It found how at the NCA - dubbed Britain’s FBI - just 43% of workers agreed they had “the tools I need to do my job effectively”.

The Ministry of Defence and Home Office ranked lowest out of all Whitehall departments, at 64% and 68% respectively.

It was 69% at the Attorney General’s office.

The figures compare with a Civil Service average of 71%.

The survey also revealed that Home Office staff felt least able out of all civil service staff in ministerial departments to let others know if they identified a serious risk in a policy or its delivery, with only two-thirds saying they felt they could.

Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner said: “This is a damning verdict on the Government’s record of tackling crime and defending Britain’s security - not from the Opposition but from the staff running the Government departments responsible for protecting British security.

“The Tories have been in Government for 12 long years but have failed to ensure their front line departments have the tools they require to properly do their jobs.

“The Conservatives cannot be trusted to keep our country safe.”

A Government spokesman said: "This Government is fully committed to ensuring the British public's safety both at home and abroad, with police numbers rising, neighbourhood crime falling and the UK leading the charge against (Vladimir) Putin's aggression in Ukraine.

"As these results show, the majority of civil servants have confidence in their leadership and resourcing, helping deliver vital frontline services and value for taxpayers' money."
