Only two areas in Liverpool have recorded more than five covid cases in last week

Only two areas of Liverpool have recorded more than five coronavirus cases in the last week, accounting for a quarter of the city's overall number of cases.

Liverpool Council’s latest Covid-19 report shows that only Picton and Princes Park have enough cases to show up on its heat map of infection across the city, with areas recording less than five cases not showing up.

Across Liverpool as a whole, infection levels now stand at 15.9 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days up to April 19.

However, those rates are much higher in Princes Park, with a rate of 68.2 cases per 100,000 people, and Picton, with a rate of 35.5 cases per 100,000 people.

A total of 79 cases were recorded across the city, a slight decrease on the week before.

However, city-wide infection levels have effectively been on a plateau in recent days.

Deaths from coronavirus continue to decline in our region also, with figures showing that six people died of the virus in the first week of this month. That figure is the lowest it has been in more than half a year.

Earlier today, Office for National Statistics (ONS) figures showed that coronavirus is no longer the most common cause of death in the UK.

Data for March shows the virus was the third leading cause of death in England and Wales.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that Covid accounted for 9.2% of all deaths registered in England and 6.3% in Wales.

According to ONS figures, the leading cause of death in England in March was dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, accounting for 10.1% of all deaths registered that month.
