Only one-in-five Manchester parents happy to send children back 'as soon as school reopens'

Only one in five parents across Greater Manchester would be happy to send their children back to school as soon as they open.

The findings come from the M.E.N's Great Big Parenting Survey where we asked families to tell us what it’s like for parents in lockdown.

Among the questions we asked was 'When would you be happy for your child to return to school?

More than 5,000 people responded to the survey, with only 20% saying they'd be happy for children to return 'as soon as school reopens'.

Another 6% said they would be happy to see them go back in July, while the majority (51%) said they would rather wait until September.

A further 6% said they'd rather wait even longer, opting for schools to reopen in January, while 14% said they wouldn't be happy for their children to go back to school until a vaccine is available.

1% of respondents said they planned to carry on homeschooling rather than send their children back to school.

The findings come amid rising tensions between ministers, council leaders, teachers and parents over the proposal to reopen schools.

The government - which is hearing new scientific advice on its plans on Friday afternoon - is planning a phased reopening of schools starting on June 1, with children in Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 6.

And despite insisting they will only open if it is safe to do so, there has been widespread opposition from parents and teachers who feel children and school staff will be put at risk.

Our survey found that it was parents who are working from home who are more likely to be happy for their children to go back as soon as possible (full-time - 24%, part-time - 21%), than those who aren't working from home (furloughed - 18%, not working - 16%).

A total of 77% of parents said they did not feel their child would be safe going back in June.

We will be publishing the full results of our survey this weekend.
