Only one different covid symptom reported by vaccinated people who test positive

Nicola Sturgeon has said time and time again that vaccines are key to having a 'normal' life - just as we had pre-covid.

In previous statements, she has said that vaccines are "weakening the link between case numbers and severe acute illness."

However without the covid vaccine, and if case numbers are high, even by just 3 per cent, the FM said it can put the NHS under pressure leading to more delays in treatments and appointment for non-covid related health issues.

Almost four million people in Scotland have now had their first dose - with over 37 million UK adults being fully vaccinated.

But as we all know, whilst getting the vaccine is the best thing we can do to protect our self and others, it does not prevent anyone from contracting covid - fully vaccinated or not.

Now, new research from the ZOE Covid Symptom study found that vaccinated people who caught the virus reported just one symptom which differed from the main ones.

Other than the usual high temperature, a new and continuous cough as well as a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste, researchers have now discovered that sneezing was the "only" symptom which was more commonly reported in vaccinated people with covid, according to the King’s College London study.

Other common symptoms in vaccinated people were:

  • Headache
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat

Researchers analysed data from participants logging their symptoms, tests and vaccines on the UK ZOE Covid Symptom Study app. They examined 2,278 adults who tested positive after vaccination and compared them to vaccinated adults who tested negative and unvaccinated adults who tested positive.

They said: "Generally, we saw similar symptoms of covid being reported overall in the app by people who had and hadn’t been vaccinated. However, fewer symptoms were reported over a shorter period of time by those who had already had a jab, suggesting that they were falling less seriously ill and getting better more quickly."

"Curiously, we noticed that people who had been vaccinated and then tested positive for covid were more likely to report sneezing as a symptom compared with those without a jab."

Although many are suffering with hay fever at this time of year, which can cause lots (and lots) of sneezing, people are being urged to take a covid test if they experience sneezing after getting a dose of the vaccine - just to be on the safe side.

The study also revealed that individuals with health conditions that limit their independence were more at risk of contracting covid after vaccination. In addition to this, vaccinated adults living in areas of higher deprivation were also said to be more risk of infection.
