Only Fools and Horses star John Challis, famed for playing Boycie, cancels tour due to ill health

Actor John Challis has cancelled his current tour due to health issues after just one completed date.

The Bristol-born TV star, 79, famed for playing Boycie on Only Fools and Horses alongside Sir David Jason, was due to carry out the 30 date tour - named Only Fools And Boycie - until November.

However, it has been announced the well-loved celebrity has had to pull the remaining dates, Mirror Online reports.

A statement from tour promoter A Way With Media reads: "Due to ill health, John's tour is cancelled with immediate effect.

"He completed the first show of his present tour, intending to continue. However, he has been advised to cancel further engagements."

The Sun reports that John was only told days ago he should not tour.

The cancelled tour comes after John was given honorary citizenship in the Balkan state of Serbia.

The award comes after a wave of “Boycie mania” swept through the country last year.

He made a documentary Boycie In Belgrade to try to explain why Only Fools is such a huge Serbian hit.

John said of the Serbian fans: “It’s just as popular out there as it is here. A local DJ said it was the only thing that made them smile during their terrible wars.

“I think people identify with those characters and the stories. They love Boycie, Trigger, Del Boy, Rodney… they have murals of them all over the place.”

After the documentary was released, the deputy mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesic, wanted to thank John for his services to the city, so he was formally offered honorary Serbian citizenship.

Mr Vesic said: “Prime minister Ana Brnabic said to me she would give the passport to him personally when he comes to Belgrade.”

A delighted John said: “I was just flabbergasted. It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me really.”

The actor played snobby Boycie – full name, Terrance Aubrey Boyce – between 1981 and 2009 in Only Fools and in spin-off series The Green Green Grass.

He was mates with wheeler dealer Del Boy, played by David Jason, and Roger Lloyd-Pack’s road sweeper Trigger.
