Only Fools and Horses' Sir David Jason spills on Del Boy's 'dirty, smelly' yellow motor

Sir David Jason has said Del Boy’s famous yellow motor was smelly, noisy and not very comfy – but they were all fond of it.

The Only Fools And Horses veteran now calls the yellow Reliant Regal “hell on three wheels”.

Sir David, 80, who co-starred with Nicholas Lyndhurst, said: “It was probably the most uncomfortable, noisy, smelly car ever.

"It had a crashed gearbox and the seats were all ripped but we had an affection for it.

“I wouldn’t drive one now if you paid me.”

David added he now prefers helicopters and wants to beat the world record for being the oldest person to fly one.

He also told Saga magazine: “I’ve always loved flying, that ability to leave the Earth.

“It’s the best thing outside acting I’ve ever done. I first learned to fly gliders, but as I got more successful, I could afford to fly more helicopters, which I did in my 60s.

“The oldest person to fly a helicopter solo was a mere 87. I’d love to take that record away from him.”

And his message to older people is: “Have a go at life, it’s still open to you.”
