Only an Excuse TV special was most-watched show in Scotland last year

More than 1.1million tuned in to watch the final episode of Only an Excuse, making it Scotland's most-watched show of 2020.

1,167,000 viewers watched an hour-long special of the iconic football sketch show, which was screened for the very last time on Hogmanay on BBC1 Scotland.

The figure means the cult impressions show, starring Jonathan Watson, was watched more than any other programme in the country last year, reports the Daily Record.

The edition was its final TV episode after 27 years and featured snippets from previous editions as well as new sketches and celebrity appearances.

It beat off an episode of I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here which was the second most watched programme in Scotland with 1,139,000 viewers.

The figures, released by TV regulator Ofcom in its annual Media Nations report, also showed news programmes covering the pandemic attracted large numbers last year.

An edition of Reporting Scotland in December had viewing figures of 1,043,000, while 1,007,000 watched a statement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on BBC 1 in May 2020.

In 2019 Line of Duty, the police corruption drama starring Martin Compston, was the most watched programme in Scotland.

A total of 1,201,000 viewers watched the final episode of the fifth series on BBC1.

On average, people in Scotland spent three hours 39 minutes per day watching broadcast TV in 2020, the most of any nation in the UK.
