Online shoppers may see payments declined over coming months

Everyone who banks or makes purchases online will be subject to extra security checks in a bid to make transactions safer.

All banks and retailers have been preparing for these additional measures, since new guidance from the Payment Services Regulation was published last month.

Lloyds Bank is the latest to update its customers on what they can expect from now on.

In an email to those who bank with Lloyds, it said: "To help keep you and your accounts safer from fraud when you use your debit or credit card to shop online, we’ll ask you more often to confirm it’s really you making the payment.

"You might have already seen this happening when you shop online, and it’ll happen more often from now on.

"As some retailers may not be ready for the changes yet, you may sometimes see a declined transaction when shopping online over the next few months.

"If this happens and you’re already set up using one of the ways below, then don’t worry – it’s not likely to be a problem with your card. The retailer should be ready soon, and you can get in touch with them to see if they have another way to pay."

Lloyds said it will check whether it's really the customer making a payment, either through its app or by sending a passcode.

Its email continued: "We'll do all we can to keep your money safe."
