Online searches for 'how to cut a mullet' surge amid coronavirus lockdown

Weeks of nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic have played havoc with Britons' lives - separating families and friends, forcing millions to work from home, and completely upending social life.

But the social restriction measures have also had cosmetic consequences too, leaving millions long-overdue for regularly sought after beauty treatments.

And just how much we are missing pampering has now been laid bare by new research published by online comparison site Cosmetify.

Online searches for 'How to cut men's hair' jumped by a staggering 632 per cent amid the nationwide lockdown, for example, while queries concerning hydrating hair masks leapt by 200 per cent.

Demand has also increased for information about how to pierce ears, slit eyebrows and remove gel nails - with all three topics witnessing more than a 150 per cent spike in search engine traffic.

The figures were compiled using Google Trends data for the week weeks before and after the UK's lockdown was rolled out.

Meanwhile, in what is a strong contender for the most obscure trend identified by Cosmetify, it seems the 1980s mullet may have come roaring back into fashion while we remain cooped up indoors, with a 124 per cent jump in the number of people looking up guides for how to fashion such a hairstyle.

Perhaps the "Business in the front, Party in the back" style has proved an appealing combination for many in the age of video meetings and shuttered offices.

Or maybe viewers of Joe Exotic's luscious mane on popular Netflix docu-series Tiger King have been inspired to take advantage of social distancing to try out the same look themselves away from the glare of others.

Either way and mullet or not, the headline figure from the data appears clear - for better or worse, we might all look quite different after lockdown.
