More and more people are shopping online as the coronavirus continues to spread.

Sales in the Rakuten online market, Yahoo Shopping and Amazon.com increased by 16% on average in the April 1-7 period from the same time frame last year, according to Nint, a Tokyo-based company that uses artificial intelligence to collect and analyze data from e-commerce websites.

By product, sales of alcohol disinfectant rose to 37 times the level the year before, and seat cushions and zabuton floor cushion sales almost doubled. Desk sales went up 60 percent, and puzzles and exercise equipment were also selling well.

"E-commerce sites are facing a situation in which demand has suddenly skyrocketed. I think sales will only continue to increase," a Nint executive said.
