Online pharmacy creates new jobs after surge in sales of hand sanitiser and face masks

A Nottingham-based online pharmacy has increased its workforce to cope with demand following the outbreak of coronavirus.

Despite the job uncertainty sweeping the nation as a result of the pandemic, UK Meds has taken on more staff to cope with its recent surge in sales.

Eight more staff members have been employed at the firm, one of Nottingham Forest's sponsors.

The news comes after UK Meds reported record-breaking purchases, including sales of 1,000 bottles of hand sanitiser in just 24 hours, as well as an 8,000 percent increase in people buying face masks throughout February.

Joe Soiza, managing director at UK Meds, based in Castle Marina, said: “We recognise that we’re very fortunate to be thriving in this economy.

"Our customer base has grown exponentially over the past month, which has put us in the position to hire staff at a rapid rate in order to cope with demand.

“Our new team members have been hired to support the pharmacy side of the business and will be adhering to recent government guidelines and practising social distancing.

“We are incredibly grateful to be able to provide local people with employment opportunities at such a challenging time.”

As a family run business, UK Meds, which is regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), provides services to thousands of patients across the country and has a team of UK-based prescribers, which are now working remotely.

If you show symptoms of coronavirus – such as a cough, fever or difficulty breathing – it’s important you don’t go to a medical facility in person. Call 111 and follow the advice given.
