Roam without worry

Vodafone allows you to roam on 4G in more countries than any other UK network. With Vodafone EuroTraveller, you can take your UK minutes, texts and data allowance to Turin for just £3 a day, whether you’re using a phone, tablet, dongle or mobile Wi-Fi device. Find the best-rated cuisine, check maps to get your bearings and upload photos of your travels. To find out more, dial 5555 to opt in, or visit vodafone.co.uk/travelling.

Need-to-know apps

For crowd-sourced recommendations, download the Trover app, which collates geo-tagged photos from a community of global wanderers. Spotted By Locals has more insider tips, this time from Ghent residents. For self-guided tours, purchase maps and guides through the Belgium Travel Guide by Triposo, or, hire a vintage scooter via La Bella Vespa - each comes with four GPS sat nav routes for you to choose from. Wheelchair users should download On Wheels, wherever you’re off to in Ghent – from restaurants to galleries – get the access need-to-know, based on your personal settings. For free WiFi, check out the Gent-Zuid public library.

Failsafe tips

  1. With Vodafone EuroTraveller, you only pay on the days you use your phone. Turn off Roaming when it’s not needed to save your data allowance.
  2. Be cautious of local Wi-Fi networks as some may be unsecured. If described in a language you do not understand, you may not know what you are logging on to. The best bet is to stick with trusted networks such as those available in your hotel or Airbnb.
  3. Set up a voicemail pin before you go on holiday. Vodafone customers simply need to dial 121, wait to be connected then select option 4, then 2.
Numbers to note

Instagram this

Explore Ghent’s waterways at the back of the city on a boat trip and find no shortage of inspiration for sepia-toned Instagram snaps. The medieval port of Graslei-Korenlei has plenty of historical buildings to capture, along with the Castle of the Counts - a fortress full of towers and dungeons. Climb the stairs of The Belfry, which stands at 91 metres tall, for great views and an unrivalled backdrop for a selfie. St Michael’s Bridge and Graffiti Street are also worth a Vine or Instavid. If you like to Instagram your meals, chances are you’ll find yourself using the #eatclean hash tag, as Ghent is said to be the veggie capital of Europe.

Ghent tech fact

TEDxGhent is the city’s independent offshoot of TED, organising regular tech talks and events.
