Online fundraising campaign launched to help Dumfries and Galloway animal hospice hit by flooding

An online fundraiser has been set up to help an animal hospice hit by flooding.

Only an incredible community effort saved the Maggie Fleming Animal Hospice from “complete disaster” when a combination of heavy rain and melting snow began taking its toll.

And now a campaign is under way to improve flood fences to ensure the site near Dundrennan doesn’t suffer similar problems in the future.

A Go Fund Me page has been set up by Zara Hay, pal of the hospice’s owner Alexis Fleming.

Zara said: “It was great there was all that help and I set the page up because I knew the day after she would have to deal with the damage.

“I’ve set a target of £1,000 and want to raise as much money as possible so that we can put in defences so that this won’t happen again and she doesn’t have to go to bed at night worrying about what is going to happen.”

When water began rising at the hospice earlier this month, Alexis posted on Facebook about the threat to the centre.

And that was when Zara – who lives in Ayrshire – put the word out in a desperate and ultimately successful plea for help.

She said: “I live in up in Monkton and I felt so helpless.

“I put it on the Dumfries and Galloway community pages and put her phone number on it.

“It was shared more than 1,000 times and she didn’t know what I’d done it so she kept getting messages from people offering to help.

“The response was fantastic. Like Alexis, I always look for the good side in things and the good thing about this is a lot more people now know about the hospice and the incredible work Alexis does.”
