An online fundraising drive has been set up to replace a memorial bench that was destroyed by vandals in Paisley’s Barshaw Park.
The fund has already collected more than £1,000 after outraged members of the community rallied to support the cause.
A wooden bench, bearing the name of a family’s loved one, at the Walled Peace Garden was smashed on Saturday night along with a terracotta pot donated by a volunteer from Friends of Barshaw Park.
The group’s secretary Irene McDonald yesterday described the destruction as “beyond comprehension” as she thanked people for digging deep to contribute.
The group is trying to raise around £1,500 for a new bench, with donations reaching £1,000 in just over 24 hours.
Irene said: “It has been amazing the level of support we have had from members of the public. We are very grateful to everyone who has donated already.
“The damage is especially saddening as the bench was gifted to the garden as a memorial by a local person who had lost a loved one.
“The plant pot and plants were donated by one of our members.
“The Walled Peace Garden is maintained by volunteers, who are members of Friends of Barshaw Park.
“We aim to ensure that Barshaw Park is a safe and welcoming space, and we deliver educational and entertaining events to the community.”
Irene explained how the area had become a sanctuary for many during the tough months of lockdown
“The garden is a relaxing and peaceful spot to visit, and it has become more popular during the last 12 months as during the covid pandemic our community has been seeking out calming and interesting walks in Paisley,” she said.
“We are disappointed that a few people have sought to destroy part of the garden, but we will not be daunted, by this setback and we will do our best to replace the seating.
“It really is beyond comprehension, what has happened.”
She added: “These wooden benches are expensive, costing around £1,500.
“We may have to consider replacing the vandalised one with a metal or stone version, however, as they would be more damage
resistant.”
Police Scotland confirmed it is aware of the incident.
