Online backlash after TikTok video of Dublin girls 'taking bets on who would get coronavirus next' goes viral

A viral video of a group of Dublin girls taking bets on who would get coronavirus next after a friend tested positive has been met with backlash online.

The video, posted to social media site TikTok, shows the girls from Skerries in north Co Dublin guessing who would get the killer bug next after one tested positive soon after a night they all spent together.

Their 55-second clip comes as two local sports clubs announced that they were taking steps to prevent any spread of the deadly virus amongst its members.

Local GAA club Skerries Harps announced that it is suspending all activity of its Adult Ladies Football and Camogie teams as a precaution, while Skerries Town FC also announced they would be cancelling activities for the time being.

It is believed that none of the girls play with the clubs in question, but would be close contacts of some members.

A source from Skerries told the Irish Mirror: “The girls in the video are a part of a much larger friendship group who have been hanging out during lockdown.

“One of the group began feeling unwell after they went out to dinner in Dublin.

“That individual went and got a Covid test which came back positive which led to the whole friendship group awaiting tests and self isolating.

“One then jokingly made an insensitive TikTok of the group predicting whose test would come back positive considering their last outing.

“None of the group knew they had Covid before licking each other's faces, et cetera.

“The girls have recognised that they shouldn’t have been sharing drinks, licking faces et cetera and that the TikTok was wrong and insensitive.

“Their actions are not acceptable 100% but this harassment online is not on.”

A statement from Skerries Harps reads: “The Club made the decision to suspend all activity for our Adult Ladies Football & Camogie teams until further notice.

"While none of our Club members have tested positive for Covid-19 at this time, we believe this is the appropriate course of action to take in the best interests of all our Club members & the wider community.

“The club have followed all HSE, Government and GAA guidelines in the past few days and will continue to do so in the future.”

Skerries Town FC said: “In light of recent events in Skerries, we’ve decided to postpone all club activities until further information is made available for the club to further assess. We’ll update you as soon as possible.

“Please note this is a precautionary measure. There are no suspected Covid-19 cases in the club.”
