TAK: Customs officials and soldiers have seized more than 15 tonnes of onions and garlic smuggled from Myanmar into Mae Sot district -- the largest haul of untaxed agricultural produce in recent years.
A total of 150 fertiliser sacks containing 7,500kg of smuggled onions worth 900,000 baht and 7,995kg of smuggled garlic worth 400,000 baht, along with the 950,000-baht truck carrying them, were seized on Friday, said Wallop Wutthapanit, chief of Mae Sot customs office, during a media briefing. Soldiers involved in the operation were also present.
The seized goods had been smuggled from Myanma's Myawaddy town. It was the largest haul of untaxed farm produce in recent years. Local customs officials and soldiers would drastically crack down on untaxed goods smuggled across the border, said Mr Wallop.
Earlier, a team of Mae Sot customs office’s suppression task force and soldiers were despatched to Tha-ard village in tambon Mae Sai Luad of Mae Sot district on Thursday and found a truck loaded with onions and garlic was parked at the area.
The driver, whose name was not identified, failed to explain where he obtained those goods when asked by the team. He was detained for legal action.
