Travel times on the route are delayed following the incident after 2am this morning.

The lorry driver was taken to hospital as a precaution.

Pictures show the vehicle partly on the hard shoulder and partly on the grass as the side of the lorry gaped open.

Bags of onions could be seen still sitting in the lorry and on the road.

A recovery operation is underway and around six workmen are on the scene assisting.

Traffic Scotland warned road users traffic was heavy on approach with delays of around 15 minutes.

Lanes one and two are closed between the Raith Interchange and Maryville following the incident.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 2.30am on Friday, 12 March, officers were called to the M74 near the Raith Interchange following a report of a lorry overturning.

"The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution and recovery remains ongoing.”
