Ongar coined 'covid hotspot' with 5 'redzone' Dublin areas located as Ireland's most dangerous

One west Dublin area is the highest infected place in Ireland according to new and worrying HSE data.

Ongar has recorded three times the number of infections per 100,000 people compared to the national average.

Over a 14-day period to April 19, the west side area had 158 cases and with their population at 36,000 people, that's an incidence rate of 440.

They are followed closely by Ballymun-Finglas in second place in Ireland with 387.2 while Lucan (287.2); Swords (286.2) and Donaghmede (274.1) all prop up the top five for Dublin.

It comes as the reopening of the country could be delayed by two to three weeks because of vaccine supply problems.

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has admitted that the Government’s guarantee to have four out of five people vaccinated by the end of June is now in jeopardy.

He said it would be “extremely difficult, if not impossible” if Johnson & Johnson vaccine blood clot concerns cause these jabs to be limited to older people.

And he conceded that it would have a knock-on effect on plans to lift lockdown restrictions.

At the same time, Mr Varadkar was optimistic on when we could get back indoors for a bite to eat or a pint at a bar, saying he was “hopeful” for this happening in June or July.

It could also mean that we see outdoor dining reintroduced first, possibly in May, to prepare the ground for the wider reopening of hospitality in the months after.

Minister Simon Harris teed this up earlier this week when he said there was “the potential for more” in May, and he mentioned “outdoor dining and the likes.”
