OnePlus has permanently disabled a creepy photo feature in its OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone that allowed users to see through certain plastics and clothes.
OnePlus 8 Pro users discovered that the phone’s infrared ‘Photochrom’ lens allowed them to see through thin plastics such as TV remotes, as well as through thin clothing.
Several users have posted their creepy photos taken using the lens to Twitter.
Lance Ulanoff tweeted a photo of his Amazon Fire TV cube, writing: “I finally have an x-ray camera! Used the OnePlus 8 Pro photochrom filter to see inside my Amazon Fire TV cube.”
Another user was able to see inside his kitchen hob.
Steve Douglas posted a photo to Twitter, writing: “The OnePlus 8 Pro's X-ray feature is very cool to mess about with, so I will be sad to see it removed at some point in the near future now.”
Meanwhile, tech YouTuber Unbox Therapy posted a video of the filter in action, and was able to see the writing on a phone box under his T-shirt.
Based on these findings, OnePlus has permanently disabled the feature.
A OnePlus spokesperson said: “Customers no longer have to worry about the see-through effect.
"The new update still allows customers to shoot in the unique photochrom style, and photos are actually clearer than they were before.”
The Photochrom lens was one of the key selling points for OnePlus with the launch of its OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone back in May.
Alongside its triple lens rear camera, the OnePlus 8 features a fourth lens, which OnePlus has termed a ‘Colour Filter’ lens.
This allows budding photographers to apply fun lighting effects and colour filters directly to their camera, rather than having to add these effects after shooting.
OnePlus explained: “Apply the Photochrome filter on the Color Filter Camera to turn ordinary scenes into surreal landscapes.”
