OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro unveiled - and they're perfect for budding photographers

It’s known for its impressive yet reasonably priced smartphones, and now OnePlus has done it again with its latest flagship smartphones.

The tech giant has launched its newest lineup of premium smartphones today, the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

While OnePlus usually hosts a huge launch event for its smartphones, unfortunately the firm was forced to host the event online, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Pete Lau, Founder and CEO of OnePlus, explained: “The OnePlus 8 series is the most powerful and beautiful flagship smartphone series we have ever created.

“The seamless immersive viewing experience provided by the OnePlus 8’s industry-leading 120Hz display, and the sleek design and compact form factor of the OnePlus 8, together deliver a burdenless, premium user experience like never before.”

Colours

The larger of the two smartphones, the OnePlus 8 Pro, is available in three colours - Glacial Green, Onyx Black and Ultramarine Blue (although this colour isn’t available in the UK).

The OnePlus 8 is also available in Glacial Green and Onyx Black in the UK, as well as Interstellar Glow in other countries.

Release date

The smartphones will be available to pre-order from 18:00 BST today.

They’ll then officially go on sale from April 21.

Price

The smartphones range in price from £599 to £899, making them cheaper than most of OnePlus’ rivals.

At the bottom end of the scale, the OnePlus 8 8GB 128GB will cost £599, followed by the OnePlus 8 12GB 256GB, which will retail at £699.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 8 Pro 8GB 128GB will be priced at £799, and the OnePlus 8 Pro 12GB 256GB at £899.

Design

The OnePlus 8 Pro is the larger of the two smartphones, boasting an almost edgeless 6.78-inch display.

Meanwhile, the OnePlus 8 is slightly smaller in the hand, thanks to a 6.55-inch display.

Cameras

While OnePlus introduced a pop-up selfie camera in its smartphones last year, this has been ditched in both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Instead, OnePlus has opted for a discreet hole punch camera in the top left corner of the screen.

In terms of rear camera, the OnePlus 8 features a triple-lens set up, including a 48MP main lens, an ultra-wide lens and a telephoto lens.

The OnePlus 8 Pro takes this up a notch with a fourth lens, which OnePlus has termed a ‘Colour Filter’ lens.

This allows budding photographers to apply fun lighting effects and colour filters directly to their camera, rather than having to add these effects after shooting.

Connectivity

Following on from OnePlus’ first 5G device released last year, the firm has included 5G connectivity in both the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro.

Battery

As always, OnePlus has packed a punch with the batteries in both new smartphones. The OnePlus 8 includes a 4,300mAh battery, while the OnePlus 8 Pro includes a 4,510mAh.

Thankfully, OnePlus has kept its Warp Charge feature for both phones, allowing users to charge their device from 0% to 50% in just 22 minutes.

However, the OnePlus 8 Pro also has the option for wireless charging, marking a first for OnePlus.

OxygenOS

OnePlus’ OxygenOS operating system has also been given a boost, with a Dark Theme 2.0, new dynamic wallpapers, and new system icons.

Users will also have the choice of smart assistants - both new smartphones have Google Assistant and Alexa built-in.
