OneDrive has a new generative AI photo tool — and it isn't called Copilot

AI Restyle in OneDrive.

Microsoft AI is here to remix your OneDrive images into different styles. A new feature called AI Restyle in OneDrive reimagines your photos as anime scenes, cinematic posters, and other styles.

AI Restyle in OneDrive retains the core elements of your photo, preventing drift that often occurs when asking AI to create images.

"Through it all, the people, places, and memories you care about stay unmistakably yours-just seen in a fresh new light," explains Microsoft.

The feature includes a "rotating set of one‑tap styles" with new styles being added regularly. You can also tweak the process with optional prompts.

AI Restyle in OneDrive is rolling out now to OneDrive for iOS, Android, and the web. To use the feature, you need to have a Microsoft 365 Premium subscription. Those start at $19.99 per month.

Even if you have a supported subscription, you may not see the option to use AI Restyle in OneDrive just yet, since it is rolling out gradually and availability depends on your region.

No mention of "Copilot"

I was somewhat surprised to see that the new OneDrive feature is not associated with the "Copilot" brand. Microsoft's blog post does not mention Copilot at all.

Not that long ago, it seemed like any AI feature had Copilot shoehorned in somehow. Microsoft 365 even had apps renamed to include the Copilot brand.

"Microslop" trended recently, and Microsoft has reassessed some of its AI efforts. Since pushback reached a head in January, Microsoft has changed its Copilot leadership structure, and confirmed plans to reduce AI bloat across Windows 11's systems apps and interfaces.

Copilot is sticking around. Some new products, such as Copilot Health, still use the name. But we seem to have shifted away from memes about Xbox being rebranded to "Xbox 365 Copilot."
