One-year-old boy killed by reversing car in Chinchilla

A police forensic officer at the scene of the fatal accident in Chinchilla.

A one-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a car in Chinchilla on Queensland's Western Darling Downs.

Police said the boy was struck by a car that was reversing in the carpark of a business in Edward Street about 10:45am.

The driver of the car, a 71-year-old man, was not injured but was taken to hospital in a state of distress.

Inspector Graeme Paine from Dalby police said the little boy died at the scene.

"There was first aid provided at the scene, but unfortunately, the child couldn't be saved," he said.

"The death of a child in any situation is extremely traumatic, but in a situation like this morning, it's an absolute tragedy."

Inspector Paine urged everyone driving to take special care while in the vicinity of young children.

"Take extra precautions to ensure you safeguard children regardless of where they are and what situation it is, just take your time and be as aware as you can be," he said.

"We're now conducting a forensic examination of the scene and we're liaising with the family and the parties involved just to try to determine exactly what's occurred."

Friends remember teen killed in stolen car

Meanwhile, Jacob Hopkins, 14, is being remembered as a strong boy with a cheeky smile by friends who have expressed shock at his death in a horrific car smash on Brisbane's bayside.

Police allege another 14-year-old was at the wheel of the car, which was stolen and overloaded.

The driver and another passenger were critically injured in the crash.
