One-year-old baby dies after pram 'pushed by his mother' is hit by car in west London

A one-year-old baby has died after being hit by a car in Kensington, west London.

The baby boy was being pushed in a buggy by his mother when the collision happened at Hyde Park Gate on Monday night, the Evening Standard reports.

The child was hit by a silver Toyota Prius. The driver stopped at the scene and was not arrested but has been helping police with their enquiries.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said the incident happened at around 18:10pm and the child was taken to a central London Hospital by ambulance, but died nearly four hours later.

Police said the next of kin have been informed but the child has not yet been formally identified. A post mortem will be carried out in due course.

One witness told the Evening Standard they saw the pram in the street while police sealed off the road and went over the car with a torchlight.

“I don’t know if the baby rolled forwards or backwards but the car hit them,” they told the newspaper. “Someone said they heard screaming.”

The Met’s Serious Collisions Investigations Unit is handling the case and detectives have appealed for any witnesses to come forward.
