One Tree Hill's dark secrets - Hilarie Burton on 'miserable' drama with 'malicious' creator

Hilarie Burton has admitted that she was felt "miserable" when she was in One Tree Hill.

The actress played Peyton Sawyer in the teen drama for six seasons from 2003–2009 and has reflected on her time on the American series in her new autobiography The Rural Diaries.

The 37-year-old has detailed how she was "lost" working on the show and that despite reaching her goal of being a working actress she was "disappointed."

Hilarie explains in her book: "The trajectory of my life changed in 2007. At the time, I was working on One Tree Hill and feeling a bit lost," she recalls.

"I worked hard all day, then went out and sang karaoke in bars with my friends till closing, then got up early the next day and worked again. … I was a miserable girl.

"My whole life had been an ambitious climb to become a working actor and I'd done it. So why was I so damn disappointed?"

The Grey's Anatomy actor - who is married to actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan -also addresses in her novel how she feared about never working again after she spoke out about "incredibly malicious" show creator Mark Schwahn in 2017.

She was among 18 several cast and crew members who claimed they had been sexually harassed by him.

Hilarie, who was in her twenties when she starred in the hit show, claims she was “groomed” by Schwahn - who wrote and directed the series.

She and other women detailed the alleged sexual harassment they had allegedly been subject to in an open letter to Variety that was published three-years-ago.

The White Collar star previously alleged he was verbally abusive and touched her inappropriately and kissed her against her will.

In her new book she shares how she was told that speaking out would be "career suicide" and that she was "afraid".

Hilarie pens: "Mark could be incredibly malicious, and I was afraid to be the one to strike first.

“Worse had happened to other women. When he tried to follow up with some of the others, they were reprimanded by their management firms, their publicists and their agents and told that doing this was career suicide. … I looked around at my life and thought, If I never work on another show or film, I’ll be OK."

Mark has never commented on the allegations and he was let go from the series the same year as the allegations were made.
