One taken to hospital as Air Ambulance called to address in Gateshead

One person has been taken to hospital after the Great North Air Ambulance was called to Gateshead on Tuesday evening.

Emergency services were called out to Robson's Way in Birtley at around 5.30pm, with the Great North Air Ambulance arriving on the scene shortly afterwards.

The helicopter is said to have left before the police and ambulance service, however the patient was taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance service.

An NEAS statement read: "We were called to attend an incident at a private address in the Birtley area just after 5.30pm today.

"We dispatched a paramedic ambulance, air ambulance and clinical team leader who treated one patient before the paramedic crew conveyed to hospital."

A statement from the Great North Air Ambulance read: "Yesterday our critical care team were activated at 5.45pm to reports of an industrial incident in Birtley.

"They arrived on scene at 5.58pm and worked alongside the North East Ambulance Service to assess the patient’s injuries, before the patient was taken to hospital by the North East Ambulance Service."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Shortly before 6pm yesterday (Tuesday) we received a report of a work place incident that resulted in a man suffering injuries in the Leafield Close area of Birtley.

"Emergency services attended the scene and the man was taken to hospital. Thankfully his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"The matter will be referred to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE)."
