One student killed and multiple injured in stabbing at California high school

One person has died and three people have been injured following a stabbing in California, resulting in a high school being placed in lock-out.

Kern County Sheriff's Office confirmed the stabbing "in the Foothill and Morning Drive" area in East Bakersfield via its Facebook page, urging anyone with information to get in touch.

The incident occurred at 2.38pm on Tuesday, with nearby Foothill High School being shut off as part of emergency protocol.

The Kern High School District has confirmed the school was put on lockout, following guidelines which specify to do so when "a potential threat or hazard outside of the school buildings or grounds" occurs, reports 23ABC News Bakersfield .

According to KHSD Officials, Foothill High School has been placed on a lockout due to suspicious activity in the area (ABC)

"It requires increased situational awareness, but allows the educational process to continue with little classroom interruption."

A "lockdown protocol is implemented when there is an active and immediate threat in the school building(s) or on school grounds. This protocol requires locking classroom doors, turning off lights, remaining silent and out of sight."

23News reporter Imani Stephens has since tweeted the school is no longer on lock-out.

The police statement said: "One person has been confirmed deceased and there are three additional victims that have been injured in the stabbing.
