One seriously hurt in West Side crash involving bus

April 11--One person was seriously injured and several others were hospitalized after a collision between a bus and another vehicle Saturday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side, fire officials said.

The accident occurred about 7:05 a.m. at Independence Boulevard and Roosevelt Road, police said.

The driver of the vehicle, whose gender and age are not yet confirmed, ran a red light, causing the bus to strike the vehicle, said Chicago Police Department Officer Stacey Cooper. The driver has been issued two citations for failure to stop at a stop light and driving on a suspended license.

Cooper said the bus was carrying three passengers in addition to the driver; all sustained injuries. There was only one person in the vehicle.

The driver of the bus, one passenger and the driver of the vehicle were transported to Mount Sinai Hospital. Fire officials said that one of the passengers transported to Mount Sinai was seriously injured.

Cooper said the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries.

A second passenger was transported to St. Anthony Hospital and the third passenger was transported to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Cooper said.

Earlier, Chicago Fire Department Chief Juan Hernandez said nine people were hospitalized after the accident, and two people refused ambulance transport.

Police said five people were injured in the accident.

No other details were immediately available.
