One route up Snowdon is off limits this year due to Covid

Snowdon Mountain Railway has announced that one route to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) will not be available in 2022.

The track, which usually reaches the top of Wales' highest peak, will travel part of the route this summer.

Ever year, the train journey carries thousands of passengers from Llanberis to the summit via two services - the Heritage Steam Experience and the Traditional Diesel Service, between mid-March to the end of October.

However this year, visitors who decide to take the train up the mountain will only reach Clogwyn Station, which is three quarter distance from the summit.

Due to the changes, the summit's visitor centre, Hafod Eryri, will also be closed for the 2022 season and reopen in 2023.

According to Snowdon Mountain Railway, the Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant effect on the track's maintenance work in 2021.

In a statement posted on Facebook, they announced: "As a result of the pandemic and the majority of our workforce being furloughed we were left with insufficient time to complete essential winter works on the upper part of the track.

"The summit building, Hafod Eryri, will remain closed for the 2022 season, as there will be no access for service trains or staff, as a result of the upper mountain track work and will open as normal for 2023.

"We are pleased to announce that we have reintroduced our Heritage Steam Experience for 2022 which will be running to Clogwyn Station from the 3rd June until the 11th September.

"We apologise to any customers who wished to travel to the summit but hope they can still appreciate the fantastic and unique journey up to Clogwyn."

If weather permitting, the train journey to Clogwyn Station will open on April 1, 2022.
