One question Meghan Markle and Prince Harry keep being asked about baby Archie

Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windor's name was long-awaited and somewhat of a surprise.

And while the significance behind 'Archie' is largely lost on royal fans this side of the Atlantic, Americans are cracking the same joke.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's choice of moniker has caused widespread speculation over its meaning.

But Americans - of a certain age and background - are reportedly asking the same teasing question: "When Archie grows up, will he marry Betty or Veronica?"

Archie Comics brought the US one of the most celebrated love triangles in popular culture and there is plenty of evidence the Duchess of Sussex was once an avid fan.

Meghan reportedly collected the vintage comics as a child and loved the character, who was depicted as "the most lovable kid in town" with a reputation of being "selfless, loyal and someone who is eager to lend a hand at any time", The Sunday Times reports.

"Archie is an icon and we're honoured and overjoyed to share his name with the new royal baby ," declared Jon Goldwater, publisher of Archie Comics, on Twitter .

Americans appear thrilled that they now have a national stake in Britain's royal soap opera.

Archie, who is seventh in the line of succession to the throne, is nine-days-old.
