One-punch killer who survived Edinburgh Marmion pub shooting dies aged 39

A one-punch killer who survived a pub shooting has died aged 39.

James Hendry was shot when gangsters burst into the Marmion pub in Gracemount, Edinburgh, in 2006 and killed his brother-in-law Alexander McKinnon.

Two years later, he was jailed for killing a stranger with a single punch.

Hendry was found dead last week. It’s believed he died from natural causes.

His funeral took place at Edinburgh’s Mortonhall Crematorium yesterday.

The Marmion pub shooting saw James Bain, dubbed the “baby-faced assassin”, open fire with a double-barrelled sawn-off shotgun after a jealous rage over his ex turned violent.

Bain, then 22, his accomplice Richard Cosgrove, 21, and Ben Young, 19, who provided the gun and planned their getaway, were found guilty of murdering McKinnon and the attempted murder of Hendry.

Two years later, Hendry attacked Edward Dooley, 54, after finding him urinating in his ex-wife’s garden.

He struck the grandad with a single punch, knocking him to the ground and causing him to smash his head. Initially, the procurator fiscal decided there was insufficient evidence to charge Hendry over Edward’s death in Loanhead, Midlothian.

But in 2013, it was decided to prosecute him for culpable homicide, to which he later pled guilty. He was jailed the next year for 40 months.

We revealed in 2014 how Bain and his childhood sweetheart wed in Shotts Prison, where he is serving life with a minimum term of 22 years.

Sources told how the nuptials reignited his bitter feud with the Hendry clan.
