One punch killer jailed after dad suffers catastrophic brain damage in bar fight

A thug has been jailed after killing a man with a single blow in a bar fight.

Thomas Allan belted Jason Haig in the face when the pair rowed while playing pool together.

The 45-year-old suffered catastrophic brain damage when he fractured his skull after falling backwards and smacking his head on the floor.

Despite emergency surgery, doctors were unable to save the dad-of-two, who died eight days later.

Allan, 52, was sentenced to five years in prison at the High Court in Glasgow today, after pleading guilty to culpable homicide at an earlier hearing.

The horrific turn of events unfolded at Harley's Skybar in Rutherglen in September last year.

The unprovoked assault, which was captured on CCTV, showed Allan punch Rutherglen man Mr Haig on the face.

As the unconscious man lay on the floor, the thug told regulars who tried to help him: "He better stay down or I'll put him back f***ing down."

As Mr Haig lay knocked out, bleeding from his head and being attended two by two men. Allan, from Govan, who was a regular at the bar,  left after about two minutes.

Mr Haig's death is the second one to devastate the Haig family this year. His younger brother Jamie died six months earlier.

David Green, Procurator Fiscal for Homicide and Major Crime, said: "A single punch has had catastrophic consequences.

"This type of attack is just as lethal as an assault with a weapon and any instance of a punch to the head can have the kind of ramifications that we have tragically seen with this case.

"The unintended consequences of Thomas Allan's actions should serve as a stark warning that one punch can kill."

The court heard that Allan has previous convictions for possession of an offensive weapon and assault.
