One person taken to hospital with 'life-changing' injuries after multi-vehicle crash on A1

One person has suffered potentially "life-changing" injuries in a serious multi-vehicle crash on the A1.

The collision, believed to involve a motorcycle, a van and two cars, happened on the southbound carriageway between Swalwell and Lobley Hill just before 1.45pm on Sunday.

Two lanes were blocked between junctions 69 and 68 as emergency services and Highways England officers were called to the scene.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said at least one of those involved was believed to have "life-changing injuries, but not life threatening".

One person was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle by ambulance after suffering head injuries.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got called to an initial road traffic collision involving a van and a motorcyclist.

"We dispatched an ambulance, our paramedic car and one Hazardous Area Response Team crew.

"We transported one person to the RVI with head injuries and pelvic and neck pain."

The southbound road was fully reopened after two hours at around 3.45pm.

Highways England warned of delays of around 30 minutes on the approach to the crash site with heavy traffic back to the Blaydon Bridge.

Drivers were asked to consider taking alternative routes and allow plenty of time for their journey.

Traffic had been able to move slowly past the collision in single file using lane one before the road was reopened.
