One person taken to hospital with leg and chest injuries following crash on A688 in County Durham

A patient has been hospitalised with minor injuries following a crash on the A688 near Bishop Auckland.

Emergency crews attended the incident shortly after 6.30am this morning where two cars were found to have collided on the A688.

The road was subsequently closed in both directions between the South Church Road roundabout and Coundon Gate roundabout.

The crash also resulted in a large oil spill onto the road surface which Durham County Council dealt with in the hours following.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service confirmed that one paramedic crew attended the scene and that one person had been taken to hospital in Darlington.

They said: "We received a call at about half 6 this morning in regards to a crash involving two vehicles on the A688.

"We dispatched one paramedic crew to the scene.

"One person had sustained leg and chest injuries and was taken to hospital in Darlington."

A representative for Durham Constabulary also confirmed their attendance at the scene.

They said: "Police were called to reports of a two vehicle collision on the A688, South Church Road shortly after 6.30am this morning (February 7).

"Both drivers received minor injuries.

"The vehicles involved are currently being recovered."

The force added that the road has now reopened in both directions.
